Statins may induce or worsen erectile dysfunction

Do C et al Statins and erectile dysfunction: results of a case/non-case study using the French Pharmacovigilance System Database. Drug Safety 2009;32(7):591-7

Dr Catherine Do, and her colleagues from the University of Toulouse, investigated the relationship between exposure to drugs such as statins and the occurrence of erectile dysfunction. Over a 20-year period the researchers extracted data about 110,685 men aged 13 – 80 years old from the French Pharmacovigilance System Database who had reported an incidence of erectile dysfunction to see if they had being taking statins, fibrates or other drugs.

Dr Do used the case/non-case method was to measure the disproportionality of combination between a statin and erectile dysfunction. Cases were defined as those reports corresponding to the adverse drug report of interest (i.e. erectile dysfunction) and non-cases are all reports of other adverse drug reports.

The French researchers discovered:

• Statins users had a 140% increase in erectile dysfunction compared to users of other drugs.

• Erectile dysfunction usually started to occur within one month.

• Just over half of these men recovered if they stopped taking the statins.

• Erectile dysfunction happened no matter what the dose or duration of the statin therapy.

• Fibrate users had a 260% increase in erectile dysfunction compared to users of other drugs.

Dr Do concluded: “The present study suggests that statins may induce or worsen erectile dysfunction”.
